About Dan Thorburn

Well, let's get one thing straight before we talk anymore politics. I am not an 'old-school' politician, nor do I want to be an 'old-school' politician. I definitely don't want to be anything like the politicians that are currently ruining this beautiful province and this country. I don't have a degree in political science (yet), nor do I have any experience working on city councils or elected boards. I never served on a student board and I don't have a family history in politics (as far as I know). I definitely do not come from a wealthy background where rich parents could buy my way into any field or profession.

So why do I think that I would be a good fit for a seat in the Legislature or Parliament? Simply put, because I'm not one of the same old politicians of yesterday. I am a first generation Canadian born in Surrey, British Columbia, with a very unique background. I had the fantastic opportunity as a child to grow up overseas in amazing countries such as Ethiopia, Tanzania and India. I have traveled around the world, seen many different countries and experienced many different cultures.

Since moving back to Canada in 1994 and going through a couple of rough years as a troubled youth, I learned the value of education and hard work and realized that if I wanted to make something worthwhile of my life, I was going to have to work for it. My parents never spoiled me and simply gave me things when I asked for them. I grew up with the mentality that this was the normal way of life and I still believe that it should be. Growing up as a child in Africa and India also bestowed in me the knowledge and vision of how delicate the balance of life is throughout the majority of the world.

Finding my passion in technology, more specifically with computers and software development, I went on to complete my post-secondary education right after finishing high school and then from there I immediately joined the work force. Of course my priorities back then were much different than they are today, however I still realized that in order for me to enjoy the lifestyle that I wanted, I was going to have to work hard for it. 10 years later I am still working hard, if not harder than ever before, yet my priorities and objectives have changed drastically over the years.

Now my primary concern is to provide a happy, healthy and honorable lifestyle for my own family, my beautiful daughter Samantha and her amazing mother Kimberly, with whom we have been building our lives together for just over 5 years. My secondary goal in life is to improve my self-worth, self-image and to help those around me. I'm not an environmental freak or anything, but I am an intuintionist. If something feels right to me, then I trust that it's for the better. If something feels wrong, then I try not to do it. For example, I don't throw anything plastic into the fireplace simply because it makes me feel a little sick inside when I think about how the molecules melt into toxic fumes and pollute the very air that is going to circulate out of the top of my chimney right down into my vegetable garden.

It's with this passion to do well, to provide a good life for my family and to help those around me whether it's in my neighbourhood, my city, my province or my country, that I have decided to be one of the brave individuals who takes a stand for what I believe in and make my voice heard for things that need to be said. I don't intend to start any violent revolutions for I am a peace loving individual. However, with that being said, don't ever tread on me or my fellow citizens for I will go to the ends of the earth to protect my rights and the rights of my family and friends.

I was also recently involved with the Fight HST Initiative to end the harmonized sales tax (HST) petition. I volunteered as the Regional Organizer for the Central Okangan region and helped to organize and manage over 300 registered canvassers throughout 4 constituencies (Kelowna-Mission, Kelowna-Lake Country, Westside-Kelowna and Vernon-Monashee). The efforts of the initiative continue on at the Fight HST web site http://www.fighthst.com.
